Moments to Savor from 1998
This story appeared in the Dec. 31, 1998 TV Times
By DAVID MAULL, TV Times
Here are some other moments worth savoring from the local high school sports scene in 1998:
- Ed Waples being named Delaware's Coach of the Year after leading the Cape Henlopen High School boys' basketball team to a 22-3 record and the Henlopen Conference championship. It was Waples' first year as Cape's varsity coach.
- The Cape boys basketball team winning its fourth straight Henlopen North title, then routing Indian River 77-64 in the conference championship game.
- Indian River winning its 18th Henlopen South boys basketball title in the past 28 years.
- Indian River's Dartez major averaging 22.8 points a game and being named First Team All-State. Major set a school record by scoring 50 points in one game and his career total of 1,698 points ranks second only to Wesley Townsend in school history.
- The Sussex Tech boys basketball team taking eventual state champion Brandywine to overtime in the state quarterfinals before falling 64-59. Despite the loss, the Ravens extended their streak of winning at least one state tournament game every year since 1993.
- The University of Delaware winning the America East Conference title and clinching a berth in the NCAA basketball tournament.
- The Indian River baseball team winning the Henlopen South title, an accomplishment overshadowed by the success of the school's softball team. It was coach Mike King's second division title during his tenure at IR.
- Brian Polk, a standout basketball and football player, transferring from Sussex Central to Sussex Tech and adding more spice to an already-hot Georgetown rivalry.
- Cape Henlopen's Elijah Worthy doing his best Terrell Davis imitation, rushing for 1,357 yards, scoring 29 touchdowns and receiving First Team All-State honors.
- The Cape girls cross country team winning the county title and setting a new low-point record just five days after runner Danielle Guerin was killed in a tragic car accident that injured three other runners.
