    Indians Shut Out Polytech 13-0

The game didn't mean anything in the Indian River High School football team's quest for the Henlopen Conference Southern Division crown and the automatic Division II state tournament berth that goes with it.

Nevertheless, the Indians provided some insurance for a possible at-large bid should they not win the South with a 13-0 win over Polytech on Friday night, Nov. 6, 1998.

Sparked by two second half touchdown passes by quarterback Shawn Watkins, the Indians improved to 7-1 overall with their third win over a Division I opponent this season.

With Delmar beating Lake Forest Friday night to rise to 3-1 in the South, the Indians must still beat Lake Forest on Nov. 13 and Smyrna on Nov. 20 to clinch the South crown outright.

Should they not clinch the South, the win over Polytech will be important because the points system that determines at-large berths in the state tournament gives more points for wins over Division I foes like Polytech.

After a scoreless first half against Polytech, the Indians broke loose in the third quarter on a 6-yard touchdown pass from Watkins to Brock Dean. Watkins then connected with tight end Kendrell Marshall in the fourth quarter on a 39-yard scoring pass that made it 13-0.

Watkins completed just 4 of 13 passes and was intercepted once, but his completions went for 104 yards and the two TDs. Antoine Stratton led the ground game with 43 yards on 8 carries.
