Indian River High School succumbed to a two-goal outburst by rival Sussex Central in a seven-minute stretch of the first half of a 2-0 Henlopen Conference field hockey loss in Frankford on Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998. Betsy Lecates and Sara Timmons scored goals midway through the first half to give Central the lead and the Golden Knights held off a scrappy IR squad down the stretch to notch their third win of the season. IR fell to 1-3 overall. "I thought we did some good things," said IR coach Cheryl Carey, who is rebuilding after the loss of several impact seniors. "I thought today was probably as well as we've played this season. To me that's a great thing." The loss was Indian River's third straight but was a vast improvement over last Wednesday's 5-2 defeat at Polytech. "We got spanked by Polytech," Carey said. "We're very young. We're trying to improve with every day, with every game -- individually and as a team." Central (3-0) broke on top 11:40 into the first half when Lecates took a penalty corner pass from Karen Pettyjohn, measured up and ripped a hard shot past IR goalie Kami Banks to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. Lecates later suffered a hand injury and was forced to miss the second half. The Knights extended their lead to 2-0 at the 18:48 mark when Banks got pulled out of position during a flurry in the crease and Timmons poked the ball into an open goal to make it 2-0. Juliane Olbers was credited with the assist. But IR refused to roll over, getting plenty of good scoring opportunities in the game's final 40 minutes. However, the Indians could not solve Central goalie Suzanne Baker, who turned away a number of hard shots and finished with 10 saves. Baker's most important stop came 5:40 into the second half when she made a splendid kick save on a penalty stroke by Sarah Lyons. "She was on," Carey said of Baker. "My kids had chances." Banks also played well a week after struggling against Polytech, notching 10 saves and shutting out Central in the second half. Brought to you by: |
