(below) Cape defenders smother a Dickinson runner
The Vikings, behind stellar running back Elijah Worthy, controlled the contest throughout and led 28-0 before Dickinson scored late in the game. "We're still gelling," said Cape coach Brian Donahue of his 2-1 Vikings, who are ranked 7th in the state. "Each week we're getting a little better. We haven't quite peaked yet, but we're getting better at running the offense. We'll know in another 2 weeks how good we can be." Undoubtedly, Dickinson's defenders had spent the week saying "Run, Elijah, Run" in their sleep. And to be sure, Worthy did run against the Rams, to the tune of 161 yards and 3 touchdowns on 21 carries. The Rams, however, got a jolt in the first quarter when Worthy came out and passed the ball. His 36-yard halfback option toss to Mark Moore in the first quarter put the ball at the Ram 4 and set up the first of Worthy's TD runs, this one of 4 yards. Matt Hall's extra point made it 7-0. In the second period, the Vikings overcame a slew of penalties to extend their lead to 14-0 on a 5-yard run by Worthy and a Hall kick.
Dickinson finally scored late in the fourth quarter against Cape's second-team defense on a 9-yard run by Cecil Warner and a conversion run by Neil Bubay. Cape quarterback John Howard didn't need to throw much as he completed 3 of 4 passes for 38 yards. Worthy, meanwhile, has rushed for 413 yards in three games. He is averaging 8.8 yards per carry. After the win, the Vikings' attention turned to next week's home battle with rival Sussex Central. "I'm going to be a little more relaxed this week," Donahue told his players after the game. "I'm going to be a little more relaxed because I know you really want this next game (against Central at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2)." Brought to you by: |
