Have any of you used or have an Avet reel for surf fishing? I'm looking at the SX or the MXLMC (MAGNETIC CONTROL to prevent birds nest when casting) I think the lever drag would also be an asset. |

I've been using conventional reels for years so I know how sensitive they can be when casting. I have an older Abu 6500 which is a great reel but doesn't hold much line. I bought a Calcutta 400 but I'm not happy with it. I thought the MXLMC would give me the distance and hold enough line when fishing the OBX. Using 10' & 11' St Croix rods. |

I have the 3 SX's and love them but I'm a boater so cast distance is not a big issue for me. I can tell you that they are built tough and easy to open up and clean & relube.

Surf i have a MXL I use on a 12 foot casting rod. I do not have the MC version. It holds a ton of line but is super fast out of the box. I static magged mine. We started with 5 mags and played with it till it runs on the edge. I have 2 mags in it and only throw 8n bait. Its a great reel for big fish on a heavy rod. I know some guys who have tried the MC and were not thrilled. You can mag these reels either with static mags or drill it with an adjustable system. I've also heard of guys taking out the clicker and putting a mag in that way. I may be down tommorrow and your more then welcome to try it. For the money I would also look at: Daiwa Saltist 30 $165 or SLOSH 30$109 ABU 7000$140 or 7500 $200 Penn 525 $145 Jim |

Them Saltists are pretty...I just don't have the funds for one. I was telling Cluck today on the beach how much I like my SLOSH30...the more I throw it, the more I like it. If you think a magnetic control is going to "prevent birdsnests"....well, I wouldn't put all my eggs in that nest! The Penn 525MAG is a mag control too...but I know people that have problems with them. I have not owned one yet....Morty told me today on the beach that it's like a woman at the wrong time of the month! Surf....I don't know how long you have been throwing conventionals....but if it hasn't been very long....Jim's suggestions are good ones. I hate to see someone put a lot of money out on a reel if they are just learning....and then not be able to learn because said reel is out of their league. Baby steps!! Just my .02 Mike |

Sorry Surf...didn't catch your second post. Not sure why you don't like the Calcutta...I don't have one...but some friends love them. If you like the Abu...but it's not enough line...why not look into a 7000 or even a 9000? Just some thoughts! Mike |

Thanks, all...been using conventional reels for over 15 years and I have had a few birdsnests. The longest cast I have ever seen was at the OBX at Buxton point and the guy was using the Daiwa Saltist. Everybody just stood around and watched this guy. He had a black Toyota 4x4 with New Hampshire tags...anyway I'm going to Nags Head in a couple weeks and I think I'm going with the Avet. Smokey, I'm taking the Calcutta and give it another test but the 6500 has spoiled me. I'll keep your offer in mind. |

Surfish, I have a Calcutta and an Avet MXL 5.8 and I prefer my Calcutta over the Avet. The Avet is very touchy and will birdnest easily, it is a very smooth reel though. I will be on the beach this weekend if you would like to try it out, just let me know and I will PM you my #. |

Mr, There were 2 guys, probably in their 30's both thin. One was working the beach and we were watching and talking to the guy with the Daiwa. He was parked next to us and had a 4'x 4' skull and crossbones flag mounted on top of the truck. This was 2 years ago in October at Buxton Point, OBX. |
