Since many of you are land based and fish the north rail at the IRI it could affect you: "The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Philadelphia District posted the following news release to the web today: http://www.nap.usace.army.mil/cenap-pa/news.htm Army Corps to dredge Indian River Inlet PHILADELPHIA (Sept. 18, 2009): The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Philadelphia District announced maintenance dredging work will begin at the Indian River Inlet in Sussex County, Del. Approximately 360,000 cubic yards of material will be removed from the channel and flood shoal for improved navigation. All of the dredged material will be beneficially used to fill and stabilize two scour areas along the northern shore of the inlet. These scour areas have developed along the United States Coast Guard bulkhead and along an adjacent stone revetment as shoaling over time forced the main channel against the north interior shoreline. Work is expected to begin in October of 2009. Funding for the project was secured through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009." I've sent a bunch of letters out not objecting to the dredging but the timing of it. I'd encourage you to tell everyone you know that fishes the area to write letters asking representatives how this will affect the environment as far as the fall run and the economics of the area if IRI fishing gets shut down this fall. |

Rob, where exacgtly will they be dredging. i thought the inlet itself around the bridges was really deep already thus the reason for a new bridge with no pilings. |

Barry, I'm not exactly sure. This was just posted on SF yesterday and I have written 4 letters this morning voicing concerns and for asking details. You know how it is there in the fall. There's no room for dredging equipment and the hundreds of boats drifting for stripers plus they are dumping the sand along the CG wall & north rocks which will surly stir it up enough to make the area unfishable on the whole north side. Who knows how much marine life that passes through there on the way out to wintering grounds will get drawn up into the dredge equipment. Lots of unanswered questions with no input from public that uses the area IMO. |

I'm with you Rob, who are you writing too? local reps/sens or the army corp? i also can think of a hundred areas that could use dredging way before whereever they are talking about also. |

Release Number: 091809 Contact: Steve Rochette Phone: (215) 656-6432 I got this info from that site and called and left a message about the decision to dredge IRI. I will call again on Monday. Maybe we should flood him with phone calls. Talk about bad timing. |
