7/5 - Got to pier mid-late afternoon, not too crowded, but steady stiff wind out of the north. Fishing was very poor, couple very small croakers. Saw one keeper flounder taken. Fish cop had police escort with dog, but dog and escort only went out to point where it gets narrow. Cop mentioned that dog got nervous around lots of people in less than open spaces. Fished until about 4 A.M. Friends of mine stayed overnight and got two keeper flounder early dawn hours. They had been down all week previous, and said that the trout bite had been good during the week (Monday & Tuesday) Wind stays heavy & steady. Water dirty, whitecaps in the bay.

7/6 - Fished late afternoon to late night/early pre-dawn. Fishing poor due to very dirty water and heavy wind. Air smokey/hazy. Wind laid down a little after 1 A.M., but all people were getting out on the end were small (baby) sharks and smaller croakers.

Saw two asian males crabbing past the pump station, anything which came out of the water which was a blue crab went into their bag... mostly 2 inch blue crabs.... As I am walking out, spotted fish cop and let him know, but he was escorting male in altered states off pier....took three cop cars and the fish cop to get him off before it was all over...must have been a slow night... don't know if they got the crab guys...

7/7 - Fished early evening until about 10 PM. Bite was poor. Lighter wind out of the north, water still pretty dirty, air very smokey. Fished the end of the 'T' on the left inside and outside Saw one bluefish taken (small), guy caught two trout jigging at night in piles. Cow-nosed rays in around pilings scaring the fish during early evening. Small croakers once again, no sharks. Got lots of bites out on the end, but no decent hook-ups. Used squid, bloodworms, chicken, mullet, minnows (did I miss anything?). The smorgasboard of bait didn't work for me this time.

I am starting to take this whole lousy fishing season personally. Last year this time the croaker were coming in and the spot were here of eating size. Makes me wonder if global warming is affecting the fishing up here. Of course, the wind out of the north did no one any good...

Pitiful fishing sums up the pier action from my perspective. But, the pier wasn't as crowded as I expected. Glad I brought adult beverages to kill the time. Hope conditions improve soon !

How was the first light trout bite? I tried last wednesday till around 9:30 with no hits. I lost a couple of spec rigs and forgot my knife at home so cutting the power pro was a beotch. Things will improve

Thanks Bob for the commendation. All I want is for these (and other) morons to obey the rules. It would be nice to see the rules on this sort of stuff enforced on a more vigorous basis during the late night action on the pier.

Some of y'all know that it can get somewhat strange out there late night. You see a lot of people working 4 or 5 nets for crabs. These are the same folks who leave horseshoe crabs on the pier to die rather than place them back in the water. They are also the same sort of folks who have the undersize fish pipeline from pier to vehicle... and clam on the wrong side of the pier.

It tends to upset me to see them pull this nonsense... Everybody has the same rights to use (but not abuse) the facilities. However, professed ignorance of the rules is no excuse.

Perhaps there should be a multi-lingual sign in spanish, korean, chinese, japanese, re: fish size limits/shellfish limits/creel limits at the pier entrance. This way, there are no excuses. Enforcement at night should be done in pairs at a minimum, with a true weapon-carrying law enforcement officer being one of the two. This only happens rarely. Usually, I see two women early evening, and then one or maybe two guys later who check coolers. They are not prepared to deal with what could quickly becom an ugly situation, especially with confrontation of a group of people actively engaged in illegal fishing-type activity.

Of course, the boating fisherman getting too close (ie within casting range) to the pier concern me as do those who go full tilt past the pier maxxing out the RPMs of their engines.

Forgot to mention the incident with a guy friday night.... I am fishing about 20 feet from this guy. I am working 3 rods (oops isn't the limit 2?) and this guy is working about 5 and fishing his lines in a spray pattern. He throws one of them over top of two of my lines. I let him know he was over two of my lines. First he denied it, then he figured it out and retrieved it. I said, oh well, it happens, to him. He gets mad for no apparent reason, and accuses me of causing the problem suggesting that if my 8-9 foot rod wasn't so long (?) that this wouldn't have happened, and why didn't I move my rods.... as if I caused the problem. Of course, I am cast straight out with enough weight to hold bottom, with the wind blowing at a right angle towards me from him....
I said that I didn't want any trouble from him and that all I wanted was for him to cast out straight like everybody else was trying to do... He went off and used some language I don't use except on construction sites and with my mechanic in jest. Hey, I just packed up and moved on down some further. But even after this, he spends the next half hour bad-mouthing me to his (?) relatives. Don't know why some people insist on fishing at an angle when the rest of us are trying to throw straight out. These are the same people who want to jig under 6 or 7 peoples other lines. I don't mind if you do this AFTER asking first, but to just come up and start throwing, getting balled up in my lines, and then acting as if I am the one causing the problem.... well I might have to be pulled off of one of these ignorant #&^$%&^%_$@*&^!!!* so and so's some night. I am usually pretty patient. But these folks rank right up there with the guys who shoe-horn their way in next to you and then invite all their friends in too. Usually these are the same folks who feel as if it is their right to fish in a certain specific location - no matter who is there already when they show up..

Anyway, I guess these are some of my pet peeves for the pier.

Ninja, as far as the AM trout bite goes, I'm not there usually in the AM, so I personally don't know. But I have heard that trout bite in general has been slow over the past couple weeks. The gentleman I see in the PM on a regular basis (who is realy good at jigging IMHO) reports that it has been slow and he is a big Fin-S rig fishing type who usually is very successful.

PR thanks for the heads up. I have not fished out there late at night in many years. Although I do get pissed when I walk out there early in the AM and put about three dozen horeshoe crabs back in the water. There is just no use for that kind of waste.
