I've seen a few references to Sharks and Rays on the board and wondered what kind you guys catch from the shore and from boats and also what size they are? A couple of mentions seemed dismissive of them and I can't help but think they're regarded as a 'nuisance' almost. Is this the case? Anyway, having never caught a shark in Scotland can you tell me if they'll be around in September, when I'm there, and how and where I'd catch them. Cheers. Phil |

Phil, they are around in Srptember. We have caught them along the beaches at night with bait. Later when the point opens they are there with the trout and the mullet. Never had one here on a fly but think they should bite one. Rick |

Hi Phil! I think a bunch of folks are lookin' forward to your trip from Scotland to our "Delmarvaous Land" as Old Mr Tawes used to say. You will find that all on this board will help you have a wonderful time. To answer your question on Sharks and Rays, The Delaware bay and surrounding inland waters are a major nursery area for these critters. They are pretty much left alone to do their business. Though some target them, the majority of fisherman regard them as an incidental catch as the target are weakfish, stripers, Tautog, Seabass and Flounder. I assume that you will be here in September and you should have many options to catching some of our local sport fish. Nice to have someone from afar, talking with us and if I can be of any assistance, please, let me know. Jay Little |

Hi Jay Thanks for the reply. I had a couple of messages a few weeks ago from Ninja and Charlietuna about what line to use on my reels. I've looked around for power pro here but can't track it down, it may of course masquerade under another name in Scotland. I assume that it's readily available in the tackle shops of Rehoboth/Lewes/IRI etc and that I should load up when I arrive. When you're 'chunking' or fishing 'bucktails' is this done at anchor or on the drift? Sorry about all these questions but I'll pay for the info by bringing some good Scotch Malt Whisky with me to share around........or do you guys practice temperance or drink bourbon.........same thing isn't it!!!!!! Only kiddin, only kiddin Phil |

Mark The Open's being played at Muirfield which is about 20 minutes drive from where I live in Edinburgh. Strange game golf, it's easily defined as 'a good walk ruined by having to stop and hit a wee ball every so often'. The weather has been terrible. Worst summer since 1914 apparently. Rumours of the appearance of a great shimmering ball in the sky have been greatly exaggerated. It may change soon but I doubt it. I do a lot of trout fishing and the fly life has been conspicuous by its absence this summer. Salt water fishing is also not what it used to be in Scotland but it's recovering slowly. I hope the inshore trawlermen, who illegally decimated the cod breeding grounds in the last 25 years, suffer many ills and pains. I gave up sea fishing for trout a long time ago. That's why I had such fun catching flounder and weakfish last year at Henlopen and why I'm looking forward to meeting you guys and doing some real sea fishing again. |
