Smoke is here in Lancaster too. I was doing some fishing this morning and couldn't figure out what was going on. I haven't found anything about it on the web yet.

Severe Weather Alert from the National Weather Service

...SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BALTIMORE/WASHINGTON 132 PM EDT SUN JUL 7 2002
...SMOKE MOVING ACROSS PORTIONS OF MARYLAND...THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA...EASTERN WEST VIRGINIA AND NORTHERN VIRGINIA...

SMOKE FROM FIRES IN CENTRAL QUEBEC WILL CONTINUE TO MOVE ACROSS THE REGION FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE AFTERNOON INTO TONIGHT.

LARGE FOREST FIRES ACROSS CENTRAL QUEBEC EAST OF JAMES BAY CONTINUE TO BURN IN THAT REGION. THE FIRES STARTED FROM THUNDERSTORMS MOVING THROUGH THE AREA LAST TUESDAY...JULY 2.

A PERSISTENT NORTH WIND FLOW HAS CARRIED SMOKE FROM THE QUEBEC FIRES SOUTHWARD THROUGH NEW ENGLAND AND THE MID ATLANTIC STATES. VISIBLE SATELLITE IMAGERY AND OBSERVATIONS INDICATE THE THICKEST SMOKE IN THE AREA IS NOW AFFECTING MUCH OF MARYLAND. VISIBILITIES HAVE BEEN REDUCED TO LESS THAN 2 MILES AT MARTIN STATE AIRPORT AND TO 3 MILES AT BWI AIRPORT.

WINDS ACROSS THE AREA WILL CONTINUE TO BLOW FROM THE NORTH AND NORTHWEST TONIGHT DUE TO LOW PRESSURE OVER MAINE. THIS WIND FLOW COULD BRING MORE OF THE SMOKE ACROSS THE REGION.

THE SKIES WILL HAVE A MILKY...HAZY APPEARANCE DURING THE REST OF TODAY...AND POSSIBLY A REDDISH TINGE AT SUNSET AND SUNRISE. THERE WILL ALSO BE THE SCENT OF SMOKE IN THE AIR. VISIBILITY WILL BE REDUCED ACROSS THE REGION THROUGH TONIGHT.

WINDS WILL BECOME MORE SOUTHERLY AND SOUTHWESTERLY ON MONDAY WHICH SHOULD BLOW THE SMOKE OUT OF THE AREA.

WHILE THERE ARE NO OFFICIAL AIR QUALITY ADVISORIES IN EFFECT AT THIS TIME...ANYONE WITH RESPIRATORY OR OTHER AILMENTS MAY WANT TO LIMIT THEIR TIME OUT OF DOORS THIS AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT.

Holy *&^% (cow)!

Excuse me while I stand up on my political stump, but to me this is one of the reasons we have such high cancer rates. Not only do we have to deal with the stuff that was dumped in our area and in our water, but the East Coast gets to breath all the stuff that blows from fires and refineries from the West.

Or for another local problem, how many people in the area do not have sinus problems!?!

My daughter called from home and thought something was wrong in the house. The smoke on the drive up from the boat was very heavy at times and in spots really reduced visability. Not as bad around Bear as it is down state, but that maybe because of all the houses (can't see that far anyway). Just saw the weather on the news, said it should end tomorrow, but ozone is in the unhealth levels.

Weezul, Having had my house burn to the ground in 1970, your picture struck me with an ugly memory. I will never forget it as long as I live. It was 2 days before Christmas. I was 16 and my sister was 12. My Mom woke us up around 2:00 am and I had crawl along the floor to get out with my sister. My Dad insisted in trying to put the inferno out. I had to drag his buns out and as we left the front door, the house exploded into flames. I will never forget my Dad as he sat in the snow and said "We must think logically!!" A true scientist in the face of adversity. Mom, however, was not so rational.
It is amazing for a person in their formative years to lose all material posessions. The truly wonderful thing about it all is that all the family realized what was really important. Us!, the essence of family.
This event changed our lives from that fateful day and made us stronger as a family. Both my parents have passed on and my sister is a law professor @ Temple and is actually in Amsterdam this week speaking @ an international law Conference. I am growing sunflowers and such but make sure I know exactly what she is up to. Sorry for the rave but your picture disturbed me.
Gizmo, if you want to act on your respiratory concerns that is what I do drop me a line.

Weezul, my post was not meant to be angry, but I hear what you are saying.

Although the fire may have been started by mother nature, the seriousness or severity of a number of these recent large fires relates to mismanagement and poor land maintenance policies. This is particularly true of some of the fires out West.

In any event, when I wrote the post, I was thinking about how actions in one area can affect those hundreds of miles away. Hence the refineries comment. Years ago factories used to have short or no smoke stacks and because of that the discharge from the refineries used to affect the towns or cities where they were located. The factories started installing bigger smoke stacks that just put the discharge higher up and away from the town, so it just came down on other towns. Someone elses problem. I am getting up on my stump again, but that was the correlation in my mind when I wrote the post. I have had some people close to me be diagnosed with cancer. As a result, these things strike a nerve and I am sure some people on this Board understand the feeling.

As one guy said on the news last night when talking about the fires in Canada, "it just goes to show how inter-connected we all are."

But, like I said, I hear what you are saying. When I read the post just now, it does seem to come out of the blue.

Jay, I am going to take you up on that offer. Thanks.
