Today i took the family out for a cruise over to the Rudder. Once again I had to simply turn the radio off. The constant chatter on 71 drives me crazzzy. I like to listen to the radio when people are using it to discuss fishing. But, on the weekend it seems that there are so many people on there that just talk to hear themselves talk. Plus I counted 12 radio checks in about 20 min. Are there really that many people that are unsure about their radio. I just wondered if this bothers anyone else. |

I work on the water commercially (not fishing). I am required to maintain a radio watch on channel 13 and 16 all the freaking time. Imagine what I have to listen to for 6 hours in the afternoon when Im on watch! That's fine that people are doing radio checks on 71 or 9, but stay the hell off 16....that's for HAILING AND DISTRESS ONLY!!!!!!!!! As for 13 that's for bridge to bridge communications for commercial traffic ie....tankers, tugs, etc.... It's amazing to me the number of times the CG has to get on 16 and let people know not to chatter. The farther North you go the worse it gets. |

Is there any special chanel members of this forum us to contact other members, when they are fishing at surf or in the bay. It would be nice to know if any members are around the area, to exchange bait info, or to help each other if a problem should arise. |

Most people out of IRI use channel 71. A few use 68. |

Sometimes the radio checks are annoying, but there is at least a legitimate reason for it. I will respond on occasion, but I hate when people use it as an excuse to ask you where you are and if you are catching fish.
More annoying was the guy who on Friday must have asked ten times what time it was.
