Headed out at 5am yesterday to the dog. It was barely light and we were just able to see the markers in IRI. We arrived at 7:30am and were fishing (chunking) by 8. It seems that the bite was really hot as soon as the sun came up. By the time we got there, everything was dead. We were on the Northeast end, as thats where the action seemed to be. We heard of a couple being caught while we were there, but we only ended up with one pull. It seemed that everyone had their limit by the time we got there! The heat was soooo bad, we packed up and were back at the dock by 2:30pm. The guys on the radio said that Massey's and the Hambone were nothing but bluefish. We could of hung around longer for the second bite, but it was too dang hot. The radio was lit up with banter, and arguing. I even heard some DE/PA/NJ hatred! My suggestion....get there early!

went out of oc early as well. we headed to the twin wreaks and got blasted w/ bluefish. What a mess! We left after an hour and chunked just NE of the dog. Got one dolphin. We then trolled around that area as far out as the 40 line & got one yft 40 lb. Seemed we did about average for missing the bite at first light. Going out sat maybe to troll around the tea cup..

tight lines

Boat's still in the shop but did manage to get out on the 4th aboard a friend's boat. Arrived at the teacup about 7:30 am and began trolling toward the Dog. As stated above by Brian, the weather was very hot. Unfortunately, at least for us, the fishing was not. We managed only one small dolphin and a couple of quick taps on the line by what were also probably small mahi. The most excitement we had was when a very heavy poly line with band iron attached wrapped around one of the prop shafts. We spent well over an hour trying to remove it by leaning out of the transom door without success. Finally, one of the guys had to dive under the boat and cut it loose with a knife.
From what I heard on the radio, some chunkers did fairly well but the trolling bite was very slow and scattered. Although I definitely prefer trolling to chunking, I guess we'll have to chunk the next time out as the trolling bite for tuna always seems to close down when everyone starts throwing thousands and thousands of pounds of butterfish in the water.
Despite the lack of fish, it was great to get offshore again. With my 28' in the shop for the last several months, all my fishing this year had been limited to flounder fishing in the back bays aboard my 15'. Can't wait for the next trip outside, even if it is a chunking trip.

Craig, I took my first ocean run Thursday out of O.C. but being semi-conservative, I started at the bass grounds (1st lump) and trolled out to the third lump. Nothing. I tried a few feathers, plugs, and even some ballyhoo to no avail. Didn't even mark anything worthwhile on the fishfinder. I found a "twin wrecks" on my chart at roughly 38 12 50, 074 44 00 ish. Just about between the 3rd lump and the 20 fathom fingers. There were a few twin wrecks but this looks to be the only one close to tuna territory. Hope this helps...

I heard the bite was on at the Jack Spot so I went there 7/1, 7/5 and 7/7. One nice dolphin on the troll on 7/1 with a few bluefish. 3 40 - 45 pound blue fin chunking on 7/5. Completetly covered with blue fish on 7/7 and couldn't even get 4 lines in the water. Nice weather though! There seem to be some bigger dolphin around this year. ....Sean

Went to the Dog 7/5. The bite was still on when we got there at the NE corner. Just was not our day. Left around 1 trolled across Ham & Chicken marking lots of fish but no takers. Maybe next trip. That's why its called fishing!!!
