Has anyone been down to the Wye yet this year? I have lost contact with my usual source for Wye area crabbing results and migration. D2 I believe that you had some connections down that way, have you heard anything as of yet. Since the fishing isn't all that great at this time. Switching gears and going for some crustaceans. Don't clam up now.

Thanks in advance,

My neighbor went down about two weeks ago with a trot line early in the morning. He came back with three dozen, but they were big. He said his buddy went a couple days later and only got 3. I guess it is hit and miss.

I put some rings out in the Bohemia this past Sunday and got Skunked! The seagrass is bad, but I heard it is bad all over. Maybe it's still to early.

Freyguy & Popeye,

Thanks for the information, Freyguy. Popeye, What can I say but, "Hitting the nail on the head" would be an under statement. That site will work perfectly. Now this thread has served it purpose, Q & A complete. Too bad others get off on tangents and simply put, turn otherwise itellegent people into idiots. Small but, honest vent.

No, they're in at the Wye now. The problem with the Wye is that the crabs behave like fish there. Sometimes they're actively feeding, and other times, not. Also, you have to move around to find the right shore and depth. This time of year, try the right shore line of the cove just before you get to Dividing Creek.

If you want volume though, slightly smaller but full, and easy to cap off a bushel, try the Chester River or the Magothy River.

Chaztuna,

I have crabbed the Chester many times but, more towards the end of July thru Sept. with great success around the Langford Creek area. Had put in at Rolph's Landing but, one He11 of a run from there to Langford going to put in at the Langford Creek Marina this year and putt 200 yds. and get busy vs. 5-7 mile run in the dark. GPS from bouy to bouy was okay but, that run required some re-fuel at the marina to insure a full trip back. At the Wye I have always Crabbed on the left shore line going out past the wooden bridge about a 1/2 mile and adjusted my trap line depth based on results, usually in 6' to 10' feet of water. Anyway Thanks for the reply.

Good comeback stro. I never fished that branch of the Wye. We always went out the left side of the island, and you go right. The guy I crab with is a stubborn PITA. In over fifteen years, he has NEVER tried the side where the bridge is. I know from my sailing days that side is lightly traveled by boat compared to the side that we crab.

Do you ever try the Corsica on the Chester? I heard in front of the Russian retreat the crabbing's good.

Also, I remember Langford Creek, but can't exactly place mentally. If you need to get down near the mouth, you can put in at Eastern Neck, I believe, just past Rock Hall.

CT,

No, I have not done the Corsica before but, unlike your crabbing partner I am always open to new places, people and techniqes. I will give that location a shot this summer time permitting. I think I saw you at the Henny flats Friday evening before last (from description you gave of yourself in another post)"Straw Hat". We were in a 15' Whaler playing around drowning minnows out in front of you. I was commenting to my companions that you were either Joe K. or one of his buds. I would't mind trying that some time. What would I need other than waders and rod? Shifting gears back to crabbing do you guys run traps or trot line?

Stro,

Just heard from my uncle that they caught 89 jimmies over 6 inches in 5 hrs on a 500 ft trout line. they said they were closer to the mouth of the Wye, and that there were more commercial guys in there then 2 weeks ago...so that must mean something, we all know that commercial guys crab were the crabs are, until they catch them all, then they move to somewhere else. Much like a Bacteria.

In my humble opinion, Delaware crabs taste better than Maryland crabs, and Indonesian crabs taste best of all. Something in the water.

D2,

You got that right. As soon as the crabs are gone they start complaining on the commercial VHF channels how thier life sux and they are going to have to get a job at Lowes or Home Depot. Go right ahead and let me catch the nice ones. Thanks for the update I should be going down on Friday the 19th regardless of the status at that time. I will give it my best shot, knock on wood I have never come out of there with out at least a bushel, some times you just have to bust tail a little to make it happen. I will be attending the D2 tourney also.

Stro, assume you are still on the every other weekend deal. If you still have an interest let me know your schedule and maybe your new camera could focus in on a tuna if all works out. By the way have you got a barbecue recipe for crabs--Sartin Style?

Ol Grady Ol Pal of mine,

Not to butter you up like a flat of butter feesh. Yes, there was something on the spec sheet of the new camera that said something about taking pictures of freshly caught tuna, would help with the break in period for the camera and extend it's life. I am still on the every other week schedule with this weekend being free just to put you in the sync. I will get a hold of you the after the holidays to discuss this subject further and possibly come to some sort of gentlemens agreement on how we should handle this delicate matter. Thanks and good luck this weekend with your endeavors.

Has anyone crabbed or heard of any crabbing reports on the Choptank lately. I have done well there in the past but haven't heard if anyone is picking any up this year. I have always used a trot line but I just purchased some nice big crab rings and in the process of rigging them up. Thanks, Jerry

Was over there on Fathers day and they were getting some off of my sisters pier, but not like were getting here in DE. Me thinks maybe a little tooo much crab dredging over the winter on the Chesapeake, but what do we know, eh? MD and VA fisheries people know it all, right?

Fishead,

Nice pics, where did you crab? I will be going in the next few weeks, just need to go over the traps and re-tie a few that were worn at the end of last year. Keep those pics and information coming. It looks like there are a few 7 inchers ther on top, congrats. GRADYLADY how did you make out in the deep? Tried to hale you on 71 on Thursday and Friday but didn't hear back.
