Charlietuna you posted this a couple of weeks ago...

"Phil, that works for heavy surf applications, when you need to cast heavier weight. If you're targeting trout, you won't need a shock leader, mostly because casting distance is not required, and lighter, egg sinkers are used with the intent of allowing some bottom movement.

If the surf is heavy, or you're fishing tournaments, and you need to get "out there", you'll need the shock leader to prevent snapoffs. A lot of us are now using the braided lines for the surf, like the power pro or spiderwire, whereas 30 pound test line has a diameter of 8 pound. I can heave 5 - 6 ounces without fear of snapoffs using 30# power pro, that is unless I bird's nest my conventionals. To the south of us on Assateague Island, the long shore currents are pretty significant, and the guys fish 8 ounces of weight to hold, and they're targeting big cow stripers, reds, or sharks. Same for the outer banks of Hatteras, and they use shock leader. I've been told that power pro is taboo down in Hatteras, but haven't fished there since its invention. Reason is that there is a fear that the power pro will cut through the mono lines if crossed up, and when fishing's hot there, people are practically shoulder to shoulder.

So, I recommend you bring along the shock line, and listen for what action to expect when you come. Don't tie it on unless the "duty" of service (weather conditions) or fishing style calls for it.

I'm curious, is your fishing line and weight sold in metrics or american standards? Japan is metric.

I hope this helps. Just keep asking us, we'll tell you lots of lies"

My apolosorries for not replying before now but I aint had the chance. How's the fishing? I had to laugh when you asked if the fishing line was sold in metrics or American standards!! I think you'll find that 'American' standards are British Imperial measurements ie pounds and ounces!!

I've been checking a beachcam in Bethany and Rehoboth and it seems you guys are having a great summer.......well at least today!! Our June is turning into the windiest and wettest us fishermen can remember. The temperature has not yet passed 68F and it's killing the flylife on the lochs. No rise to hatching flies = useless evening fishing. I just hope the salt's being more kind to you.

Where are you based? You said in our earlier thread that the guys would be willing to take me out and I was wondering where they launch? I'll be hiring a car for my 3 weeks and will travel to wherever I can get fishing. Ten weeks today my wife and I will be on arriving in Philly.

Phil,

Get closer to the dates you're interested. Maybe some of us will be willing to do a charter. I would. There are plenty of good guys on the board as well that may offer to take you out on their boats. I'll be glad to take you surf fishing, but the water temps will be at their peak, and fishing in the "dog days" drops off. Best bets are the Indian River Inlet, casting artificial offerings, and live-lining several baits. We'll keep you apprised...just stay tuned.

By the way, I "snapped off" 5 ounces using 30# power pro / no shock leader on Sunday. So I change my mind about shock leader. I'm putting it on all my casting rods.

CT...I'm making a transition to conventional. Picked up an Abu 6500 C3 CT Mag and used it during my last trip. I had it loaded with 17lb mono at B&R. I asked them about putting Power Pro on it and they said that even with 50lb PP, it digs in and you end up with snap offs. I understand you can really wing a load out there but with only five ounces and 30 lb PP, I'll bet it was more of a dig in problem.

There are plenty of us who would love to show you around and do a little fishing. As and ex avid flyfisherman I do feel you pain. When you get to the states let me know via e-mail, I will try to help you out.

Ninja,

That's 'drink and post' Geesh! Just kidding. Looks like you bailed out of this area just in time now that they have the catwalk shut down. Saw a petition at Stemples to get it re-opened with 7 pages of signatures.

Hey Ninja,
I was out in SF at Sears Point last week, and
that #5 car almost came home in victory lane.

Keep the faith, Catch the Fish!
