hello toughtog , this is what works for me . i usually fish the last part of the incoming till the tide starts running out to fast to hold bottom .i use a #5 gamakatsu octopus hook and a teaser tied either to a dropper loop or a three way swivel . 18 to 24 inch leader. white, green, or (if you know my great buddy greg he ties these awesome peeler crab imitations for me)some guys use red teasers. if ya dont have gregs, i recomend white or green. some guys use circle hooks . for bait start with chicken till peelers are availble. i use one rod as i hold mine the whole time . some guys use 2 i dont recomend it you will miss to many hits jumping up to grab your rod . i use an 8 foot med heavy spinning rod with 20 lb fireline.most guys use a 10 ft surf rod this year i'm going to try flourocarbon leader. the trout can be shy some times. most of the time they smack it and boy believe me you can't wait to experience this . other times they are sneaky and pick it up and kind of swim off with it . this is another reason to hold your rod . it will seem like the tide is moving so you lift your rod a little to keep tension and then the trout should try to run with it. set the hook. you can drive down the beach about half way then park and walk over to the river at the snow fench crossing. it will be muddy wear boots . bring a bucket to sit on ,also helps carry your stuff.i usually bring a couple extra hooks, sinkers , i prefer bass casting ,leaders and teasers so you dont have to walk back to your truck .rod holder (sandspike). night or day they bite lasts about 6 weeks should start any day now . any more questions email me if i left anything out . also if maybe you would want to meet and fish together. also park highup to the dune line . hope this helps, goodluck

I'm one of the circle hook users.....Owner 3/0, 2 on 2 dropper loops (mine are actually pretty short, only 6" long loops or so. Don't need to hold your rod at all, or even run to grab it. Rod will either bend over, or go slack, depending on which way the trout moves, and you can calmly finish whatever you were doing, like cutting up a peeler, and walk over and reel in the fish. Literally haven't had a single hit fishing the river at Broadkill that didn't result in a hookup, haven't lost a single fish while hooked up.

You can do just fine walking from the parking lot to the river, no need to drive along the beach and walk to the river, though some do. I don't have a 4x4 anyway.

It's all timing, however. High tide in the middle of the night.

to add to this post, here are some things that I do.
1. You don't hold the rod just to hook the fish, you hold it to keep the sinker moving, many time that was the only way to catch trout, it also enables you to feel just the tinyest bits, some times the trout just like to nibble at the bait and the rod in the hand is the only way to feel that.
2. have tried circle hooks, use them alot for drum and stripers, but don't like them for trout, have had alot of misses, mostly use gold kale hooks [3/0], almost always hooked in the side of the mouth.
3. Setting the hook is what fishing is all about, can't do that with circle hooks
4. 95 0/0 of my trout are caught on on teasers with a fishfinder, don't know why, just that it works, mostly green or white teasers, and when the water gets warmer, pink.
