What is your favorite hook for tog.Every one knows they can be rather tricky to catch, and some time hooks can make a difference. I like a Mustad 3407 1/0 or 2/0 the best.It is a stainless regular length medium strength hook.I pinch the barbs down too.Once in a while a crab will slip off but so what.Believe me it is so much easier to release the fish with out a barb.I don`t have to rip the hook out doing unnecessary damage to the fish. Try it ,you may like it. Bucktail Bob |

I have to agree with you on the barbless hook, it really made a big difference when I mashed the barb down during the D2 tourney. Also, like you said it puts alot less stress on the fish as one tries to wrestle the barbed hook out of their gristley mouth. Mark J. |

Bobw,..again,...I must agree with the barbless hooks,....but,..for Tog fishing, when and if they swim in the rocks, and you are in the waiting game......... the barb comes in handy...I have waited for a long time waiting for a nice fish to swim out...it will happen sooner or later,...thats why I will use two rods Taug fishn...ANY OTHER COMMENTS ? Just my way of toggin....seems to work for me,...those buggers are fast and thats whats makes them so fun to try to land. Isn't this a great time of year ? Good luck to all Greg |

I tried a VMC (Vanadium) Octopus style hook (3/0) this year, and I really like it. It is tough as nails, very stout, and and it has a small barb. It is razor sharp too. I don't know the part number, sorry. Nothing fustrates me more than to get a huge tog on, and then straighten my hook. I use 50# test spiderwire line mostly. These hooks are tough enough not to straighten. |

Personally I like a semi long shank for tog, size depending on the size of the fish I am fishing for but usually a 1/0. I agree with using a stout hook and heavy line and leader but more because of scraping then the fishes strengh. I want a hook where I am not going to get bit while removing the hook,or having the leader cut on it's teeth. |

Hey CJ,I wouldn`t worry about being bitten.I never heard of anyone getting it.I have had my fingers in thier mouths several times. They are very docile. On a release I will cradle the fish by the stomache with one hand aim him/her at the water, rotate and push the hook out and away they go.No pliers,no wrestling.I used to use braided lines for tog but had to many cut offs on rocks.30# ande is now my choice Bucktail Bob |
