I am all set up to troll offshore and now we are going to try chunking. We have a heavy plow anchor and windlass but not near enough line. What do you guys feel is the best amount of anchor line to purchase?

The coast guard says 5 to 7 times depth, that has to be a little unrealistic, as I don't think everyone out there has 900 to 1200 feet of line on their boats. I want to get a safe amount that works without filling up boat with unneeded line.

Thanks in advance

Jim

Jim,

A full spool of nylon is 600 ft., that's all I carry for now. If you shop around you'll probably get a price break with a full spool as well.
If you look on the boating forum, Brad posted some links to good sites for line.

Found old thread in boating. Think I'm going with the 2 600ft spools also.

Thanks

Last year I bought a 600' spool of 1/2 nylon New England 3 Strand rope from Hamilton Marine. Their price was very competitive and you cannot beat the quality of the New England 3 strand rope. It really is good stuff. You can find Hamilton at http://www.hamiltonMarine.com
