Trader's A Lewes Original

Margaret Ann Lupton and business partner Susan Masten are the current keepers of a Lewes tradition spanning more than 50 years.

As owners of Trader's Jewelry and Gift Shop on Second Street, Lupton and Masten are guiding the family-run business through its sixth decade in one of Delaware's most historic towns.

"We're the only store besides Graves (men's store) that was originally on Second Street," Lupton said. "Sure, it makes you feel good. Not many people can say that today."

The business was started in the mid-1940s by Lupton's grandfather, Clifford Trader, who had a keen interest in clocks and watches.

"He really started the store repairing watches and clocks," Lupton said.

The store gradually grew to include jewelry and other gift items. It evolved into a Lewes institution under the ownership of Clifford and his wife Margaret. The couple also owned a local restaurant.

Lupton's parents, Elsie and Davis Wood, assumed ownership in the late-1970s and moved the store to the Second Street location it occupies today.

When the Woods chose to retire 12 years ago, Lupton returned from California, where she had lived for 16 years, and became the new owner of the business.

Although styles have changed during the past 50 years, Trader's proudly shows off its roots. Shelves and display cases are remain filled with clocks and watches and repair service is also available.

Lupton noted clocks make ideal gifts for all occasions.

Trader's also stocks gold and diamond jewelry, candles, frames, dishware and home furnishings in crystal, silver, pewter and brass.

"I think we try to have something for everyone," Lupton said. "We're probably a little more traditional."

Brass furnishing are especially popular because of the town's colonial look, she added.

Baby gifts are also some of the store's most popular items, along with a line of plastic tumblers.

Although Lupton is carrying on a more than 50-year tradition, she has adjusted with the times and kept the inventory up to date.

"It's always been fairly traditional," she said. "You have to stay current."
